Prayer: Against the Spirit and Bondage of Addiction
Share
Did you know that addiction is a chronic medical disease? It’s considered a disorder in the brain’s reward system. It’s broken down into four c’s—craving, compulsion, lack of control, and consequences.
Addiction is more than substance abuse of drugs and alcohol. There are behavioral addictions which can be TV, social media, sex, pornography, eating and food, working out, etc.
People who struggle with addictions are unable to stop, no matter how hard they try. They need a substance or behavior to get “high.” They experience withdrawals when they can’t feed their addiction. This can be jitters/anxiety, lack of focus, irritation, anger, and annoyance.
In the bible, the spirit of addiction is called bondage. Bondage means servitude or slavery. It means to obey, submit to, or become slaves to some base power, to yield to, or give oneself up to.
The spirit of bondage contradicts what Christ did on the cross. Through Christ, we’re under adoption to sonship, not bondage or addiction (Romans 8:15).
The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “ Abba, Father.” -Romans 8:15 (NIV)
Allow God to free you and deliver you by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Remember, this is a spiritual battle. We fight spiritual battles with our spiritual weapons and faith.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. -Ephesians 6:10-11 (NIV)
Pray this prayer if you, or someone you know, struggles with addiction.
Adonai in heaven, thank you for renewing my mind and making me a new creature in Christ. Lord, I repent for feeding the addiction(s) of _______. I repent for bowing down to the addiction(s) of _______ and serving it. I repent for being a slave to _______ when I am free by the blood of the Lamb. Lord God, I renounce the addictions(s) of ______, in the name of Jesus Christ. I repent for allowing bondages to become strongholds in my life when you’re my stronghold. Lord, I tear down every principality, ruler, and authority that are trying to keep me and my bloodline bound. Jehovah Sabaoth, send your angel armies to utterly destroy every demonic power, authority, ruler, and altar speaking against me and attacking me and my bloodline. War against them and cast them down into the abyss. Remove the yoke of bondage and addiction from my soul and those in my bloodline. We repent for being spiritually dead and allowing strongholds and bondage to run through our bloodline. Adonai, it stops with me. Every addiction, bondage, and slavery stops with me. I rebuke the spirit of addiction. I rebuke the spirit of bondage. I rebuke slavery. May the Holy Ghost fire consume them now in Jesus name. Lord, I am struggling with the addiction(s) of _______. Remove them from me, Lord God. Change my desires. May my desires align with you and your Word. Renew my mind and restore me according to your glory. Make me whole in Christ. Thank you for your redemptive power. Thank you for your love, mercy, and grace. Reveal to me any and all generational curses, covenants, and strongholds in my bloodline. Guide my steps, Lord God. Restore my soul. Remove the taste out of my mouth for _______. Lord, you are the Chain Breaker. Break the chain of addiction off my life and my bloodline. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
